What is Legal Coaching?

The legal landscape is changing at a fast pace.
Gone are the days where a client passively allows a lawyer to handle “everything.”
Clients need and want fuller participation in their legal matters.

Limited Scope Services is only part of the answer

Most legal professionals are familiar with limited scope services. Providing legal services in this way does not require a new set of skills; it simply requires us to narrow the scope of the services from the whole case to a project-specific mandate.

But today’s legal consumers need and/or want help on more than one specific occasion. They want to be able to actually handle the case, at least partially, on their own. To manage their legal matter, people need education, guidance and support. That’s where legal coaching comes in…

“Legal coaching is a type of unbundled legal service

  • Where a lawyer-coach offers behind-the-scenes guidance on both the hard and soft skills of lawyering
  • In order to provide an SRL with the strategies and tools needed to present their own case as effectively as possible in the absence of counsel”

-Nikki Gershbain, 2017 LFO Research Fellow
